A note from Artistic Director, Katie Noonan
On behalf of the AVÉ ensemble, I’m delighted to be able to share our first song cycle featuring the words of Australian poet David Malouf. Malouf, an iconic figure in Australian literature, is a poet whose words transport readers with rich emotion. With an ability to capture the essence of Australian life and the complexities of human experience, Malouf’s poetry invites us to contemplate the profound beauty of our surroundings. This collection of works, commissioned by AVÉ, champions living Australian composers that have woven Malouf’s words into a new and captivating sound world that represents AVÉ’s distinct 21st-century Australian voice.
I firmly believe in the importance of celebrating the human voice to tell the stories of our era and to inspire our audiences to find their own voices. Our repertoire, much like our Australian culture, is an exquisite fusion of the past and the present. The timeless beauty of the late Renaissance and early Baroque eras, characterised by polyphonic vocal compositions, intertwined with the modern music of the 20th and 21st centuries and the languages of our First Nations People.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to David Malouf for graciously allowing us to bring his poetic vision to life through song and for the composers who have masterfully brought them to life. This album encapsulates the essence of AVÉ,
and we hope you’ll enjoy discovering a new sound world that resonates with you
and yours.
